parity checking

The process of verifying the integrity of data that is transferred between computers, usually over a modem or null modem cable. The most common methods are even parity checking and odd parity checking. Depending on which parity checking method is used, an extra bit, called a parity bit, is added to each group of bits to make the number of bytes being transmitted either even or odd. Both computer systems must use the same method of parity checking.
