The glossary below contains many of the terms you will find in common use throughout the Symantec Security Response website. Please refer to this list to find definitions of terms and answers to other Internet security-related questions.

virtual IP address

The IP address of the cluster. The address that the virtual server name should resolve to.

A unique IP address associated with a VCS cluster. This address can be used on any system in the cluster, along with other resources in the VCS cluster service group. A virtual IP address is different from a system’s base IP address, which corresponds to the system’s host name. See also IP address.

A unique IP address associated with the cluster. It may be brought up on any system in the cluster, along with the other resources of the service group. This address, also known as the IP alias, should not be confused with the base IP address, which is the IP address that corresponds to the host name of a system.

A unique IP address that is associated with a storage cluster. It may be brought up on any system in the cluster, along with the other resources of the service group. This address, also known as the IP alias, should not be confused with the base IP address, which is the IP address that corresponds to the host name of a system.
